skinner baby tender
06 Nov 2008Some friends of mine just had a baby (ha ha suckers), and they built a skinner baby tender for it. (No, not a skinner box.)
It’s pretty interesting. Here’s one of the original articles that he wrote about it.

There’s a picture of the one my friend built here
Caveat: I know someone raised in one such Skinner “Baby Tender”. While in this hermetically sealed sensory-deprivation contraption they couldn’t sense, hear, or smell their mother (or any other human for that matter), to ill effect. Skinner was no infant/child developmental behaviorist, that’s for sure.
You may want to try reading the article before commenting, next time. Skinner baby tenders are a) not hermetically sealed, b) not sensory depriving, and c) not intended to be the location of the baby any longer than a normal crib.
Sounds like your friend’s parents were abusive.

I’d like to see pictures of this baby tender. Where did they find plans for it? Or did they build ‘free hand’? After reading your post I did research and really dig the idea behind it. Thanks for the post!
