smoking is gross
04 Jun 2007.. but I will die defending your right to do it.
An uncharacteristically anecdotal and sentimental post from me, but I tossed in some good ol’ fashioned libertarian rhetoric, too.

I knew that subscription to Reason would finally pay off.
I didn’t actually read this post, but somehow I doubt you’d be willing to take a bullet for me if I was to light up next to a gun-toting anti-smoking activist.
I am hurt, sean. HURT!! Anyways, by “die”, I actually meant “blog”.
“a gun-toting anti-smoking activist”
I don’t know that there are many of those, so I don’t think you have that much to worry about. :P
Whoa. It’s like I agree with you are something.
make that “or something”.
I’ll die (okay, blog) to defend your right to smoke, too. I am in no way supportive of banning cigarettes. I just support a ban on smoking them indoors in public places.
See, I’m in a libertarian dilemna with this issue. (Which is why I guess I’m not a 100% staunch libertarian). *I prepare to get lambasted by some of those really really vocal & defensive bloggers out there* –Insert big courageous “Here I Go” sigh– Although I all about the “let me live and I’ll let you live” philosophy, I think that there are lines. When someone smokes, they are doing something that is believed by most scientists to be harmful to them and those around them. That is where my issue is. If you want to smoke in your own house, go for it. But don’t inflict your harmful addictions on those who chose to share the same public space. Often, people try to compare smoking and drinking alcohol as being the same, but I don’t believe that is true. Drinking doesn’t directly harm another person, unless the person doing the drinking goes out and mows someone down with their car. That’s illegal. Dare I say it, but I think smoking in public places is kin to drunk driving.
okay, now I’m going to get bombarded. I’m ready for ya…
I am swamped at work right now, but let me just say: I think you and Andrew both (not to mention the legislation itself) are taking a very liberal definition of “public” space, here..
hmm… you’re right, actually.
Now I have to go back and re-think things..
Thanks! Your comment has been submitted and will appear shortly.
LMAO, well, thanks for defending the smokers. ;)
