VHS Or Beta

I have been liking this VHS Or Beta album, “Night On Fire” quite a bit. They are one of the many new wave revival (new new wave? what’s the hip term for this?) bands out there these days along with Dogs Die in Hot Cars and the Futureheads.

So far, I like this album a lot, but it is a bit of a guilty pleasure, because I don’t think they’re doing anything particularly inventive other than trying to sound exactly like Duran Duran (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Which brings me to my obligatory music-snob-referential-capsule-review: Duran Duran with Robert Smith on vocals.

Also, one of these days, I really need to learn to just gradually work a new album into my listening rotation, rather than burning through it over and over endlessly on repeat. My profile on audioscrobbler is pretty indicative of this. Just another facet of my obsessive compulsive personality, I guess. It’s a good thing vinyl is obselete, or I’d have a lot of worn records.

I have just the opposite problem. These days it’s not uncommon for me to buy an album and *never* play it. New stuff just goes into the iPod, and as it comes up on shuffle play maybe it’ll get enough of my attention for me to listen to the whole thing through at some point.

I have a coworker who djs and loves this kind of music. I’ve listened to a lot of it but most of it so far hasn’t moved me, with the exception of The Arcade Fire, which truthfully don’t really neatly fit this category of new-wave throwback nostalgia bands. But if you want any suggestions, let me know - I have my coworker’s playlist via iTunes sharing at the office and can probably give you some names to check out. :)
