violence

There’s a lot being said about the violence today in Falluja, Ramadi, Najaf, and elsewhere. But, once again, billmon says everything I want to say better than I ever could:

It’s almost always a bad idea for guerrillas to come out and try to hold territory against a modern military machine like Centcom. Tactical surprise only takes you so far, and while the Sunnis may have gotten the better of the Marines today, Centcom almost certainly will try to deal out an annihilatory response. And God help any civilians who happen to be in the way.

How many of them are we going to have to kill before they understand we’re only there to help?

It’s doubtful the insurgents will try and hold territory. What they will do is hit and run.

The idea is to provoke a disproportionate response from the US military. It’s classic guerrilla warfare.

I will guarantee the on-site US commanders know this is playing into the enemy’s hands.

Well, what we’re seeing is that they are trying to hold a bit of territory.. Najaf, and now Al Kut..

I agree though that this probably won’t last (or it will be quickly crushed).
