first step

I’ve always had an irrational (I thought) fear of walking over the various grates, vents, sewer man-holes, and access panels that dot the sidewalk in a any urban area. Or at least, I thought it was irrational:

Watch your Step

As PhilNed Ryerson said, “Watch that first step! It’s a deeooooozy!” Nice to feel vindicated, but I hope no one broke their leg or anything.

Doug beat me to it.

But you were close. Phil was the groundhog. And Bill Murray’s character. Who was a god. Not The God, but A God.

You too?! I hate walking on those grates and vents. Anything that can open I avoid, to my husband’s infinite mockery.

It’s an understandable mistake.. I’ve only seen it around 4,566 times, so..

Walking over grates is on my list of irrational fears as well. I’ve done the calculations and I figure I have a .7 percent chance of dying in a grate-related accident. When sewer alligators are factored in, the chance dwindles slightly to .3 percent.

Add me to the list of those who have an unexplained [until now] fear of sidewalk grates.
