If Michael Richards had been smart, he would not have apologized. He would have gone out on stage and done the exact same thing again. Then he would have gone on Letterman – not to apologize – but to get bitch-slapped by Jerry Lawler.
Instead, he apologized. Now everyone knows he was serious.
I saw a bitter, deranged man who let his bigotry fly unchecked. The lynching thing? That was his first comment. Then he backed off that and went for the less inflammatory “nigger.”
His apology was weaksauce.
In his interview on Letterman, people in the audience started sniggering when he said “Afro-American”. And then Jerry Seinfeld said “don’t laugh, this isn’t funny”. I really really wish Larry David had been there to say “actually, yeah, it kinda is, a little bit.” Instead it was just awful to see Jerry Seinfeld—Jerry Seinfeld!—actually not want people to laugh.
Looks like you could do a good job replacing his manager (if he has one any more).

Well in my opinion, I definitely was not moved or convinced by his apology on David Letterman. And to be honest, it actually made it worse. I especially knew he was not serious when he said the word Afro-American. the bottom line is that he knows he screwed up. And he is just doing this in an attempt to get people off of his back. Obviously, he must have been in a room filled with majority white people. Because I can guarantee anyone that if it were a room full of blacks and he got so called heckled like he claimed he did, then those words would have never uttered from his lips. He’s a washed up actor and comedian who never had much of a career until Seinfeld, probably looking for as much publicity as he can get. He’s miserable and misery loves company. When you are a miserable person, your demeanor, behavior, mentality and actions are always going to be negative and unpleasant. I used to be a big Seinfeld fan and Kramer was my favorite character. Now everytime I look at that show and see him, that situation will always standout in my mind. It really was not that serious he could have just let it go. Apology, yeah, right.
i believe that kramer was being extremely sincere. it showed that he had real maturety to willingly go on the letterman show and apologize to all the people he insulted.
I think Kramer was being 100% serious with his apology.I’ve seen and heard plenty of people who insult African-Americans and Jewish people, but none of them had the maturity to willingly and publicly apologize.

I still don’t think he was serious, especially after watching the footage. Stupid and messed up, but not serious. My guess is he’s apologizing just because it’s finally sinking in how badly he screwed up.
Side note: I noticed some people in various comments thought that since someone yelled “cracker” back at him, that made things even. Has anyone ever been offended or hurt by the use of the word “cracker”? Hardly seems equitable.
