Wow. I wonder exactly how old that kid is–about 4 or 5? Because right off the top of my head, I can name at least 3 animated movies that were rated “R,” which inidicates, by default, the movies are for adults. I haven’t seen any of the three that come immediately to mind, however (Heavy Metal, South Park, Beavis & Butthead). And I’m sure there are “films” that fit the description that my 7:30am brain can’t think of.
Hey guys. Sam Smith here, author of the quote being made fun of. No I’m not 5, and my apologies for not being reminded of a few of these mentioned films. Maybe it wasn’t the perfect way of describing it. But if you’ll allow me to engage in a discussion about it, I still would say that a lot of people who lined up for Beavis and Butthead, South Park, and Akira were teenagers. I think the Fritz the Cat stuff was all short subject – again, correct me if I’m wrong. Anyways, I haven’t seen all the films on the Onion’s list (a good one). But A Scanner Darkly does seem to be something different – a feature-length fiction drama marketed solely to an adult audience. That’s pretty rare.
Rotoscoping isn’t real animation…it’s tracing. My 7 y/o can trace. I won’t wait in line for a freaking tracer.
Sam, you’re missing out on an entire country’s contribution to feature length adult-targeted animated films. JAPAN.
Of a few that come to mind right away that only a very mature teenager or adult would understand or appreciate:
Jin Roh Ghost in the Shell (1 & 2 especially) Millenium Actress Perfect Blue Grave of the Fireflies
Here in the US, Heavy Metal (1 in 1981, 2 in 2000) are examples of feature lengths marketed to adults. Saying “That’s pretty rare” is a far cry from saying “first … in the history of cinema.”
‘Grave of the Fireflies’ is one of my favorite movies but Chris never wants to watch it. I am guessing because he does not enjoy feeling like jumping off a bridge for an entire day afterwards.
Sam, you can come over and watch it with me.
Okay, okay, so if you knew me you’d know that I have a HUGE tendency for hyperbole. Chris’ comment, though not made in the nicest way possible, has only reminded me of that. So consider it removed from the record. I also should have said “American film” – I’ve seen plenty of Japanese anime and I LOVE Grave of the Fireflies. And, like everyone else, Miyazaki of course – My Neighbor Totoro is (and I’ll stand by this hyperbole) one of the best children’s films ever. I also really liked Millenium Actress, and I’ve heard that the Neon Genesis Evangelion series is mind blowing.
No hard feelings, of course. I’m sortof a dick.
a lot of people who lined up for Beavis and Butthead, South Park, and Akira were teenagers
A lot of of people who will line up for Scanner will also be teenagers – does that make it not a film for adults?
‘sort of’

Oy. What would Fritz the Cat say? Actually the onion av club did this list a few months ago: http://www.avclub.com/conte…
