OMG THE ATKINS DIET IS DEADLY!!!!111 .. Well, that is, it killed this one woman. Well, almost.

Well, okay, she had ketoacidosis induced by pancreatitis. But she was on the Atkins diet!

That proves it! Who needs science?!

Losing weight is a bigger health risk in itself than the particulars of any specific diet.

The BBC is almost as bad as the NYT these days. And they used “nauseous” when they meant “nauseated”. Fuckers.

I didn’t get that out of the article at all. A batch of doctors are saying that low-carb diets can cause minor helath problems which can then be aggravated by other conditions (which would themselves normally be minor) to result in a serious or life-threatening situation.

The diet’s not deadly, but it can stress your system to the point where a relatively mild illness could land you in bad shape, as apparently happened with this woman. Of course, so can obesity, but I think what they’re saying is that more moderate diets are safer than the extremes.

But I guess that doesn’t feeds the outrage well enough.

SHUT UP I HATE YOU

That is what is happening, but it’s not a fair paraphrasal of the article and its tone. The lead of the article is “Following a low carb diet could cause serious health conditions”, which is alarmist and misleading.

This is true of almost any dramatic weight-loss regimen and/or diet change. As Rev noted, any weight loss is probably a bigger health risk than the side-effects of the diet used to lose it. Naturally, however, any of such health risks need to be weighed against the health risks involved of dying from diabetes-induced heart disease or a stroke.
