mad cow

A few years ago, whenever the first mad cow scare was, I hadn’t been paying much attention to the news. I did, however, notice that steak, even at Kroger, was plentiful and cheap. I ate like a goddamned king all summer long.

Then suddenly meat started getting expensive again, and I was really thrown for a loop. I had gotten so spoiled.

Anyways, I realize I am probably going to be the first to die of mad cow, but I couldn’t be happier to hear the news. Come on, baby, let’s see those ribeye prices fall.

Indeed. Good beef cheap. Hurray! There are things you can do to minimize your risk. Eating steak that doesn’t have a bone in the cut is one of them (the prions often rest in the connective tissues)- I guess that includes ribeye and t-bone. Filets and strips are better. Avoid burgers and cheap cuts.

Even though there has been another case of mad cow disease this time in Alabama does not mean that you shouldn’t eat ‘cheap’ pieces of meat or even hamburgers. As long as it is properly cooked there is nothing to worry about. If you really want to be hypersensitive about it then don’t eat any beef nor any poultry (due to the bird flu) either.
