shanghai noon

Can anyone explain why in Shanghai Noon, Jackie Chan’s character, who was Chinese, says “Sayonara” to Owen Wilson’s character?

This is really bothering me.

Great catch.

Hey you were watching that too. Yeah I kinda puzzled at that.

Probably just scriptwriter error.

Or, more charitably, it would be like an American saying “adios”, or even “sayonara”.

I can’t believe you made me go hunt this down. It’s not a script error, it’s a joke, or at least a callback to an earlier scene.

P.S. In a movie about Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan in the Old West, this is what you find jarring?

P.P.S. I miss being alive. :-(

I figured it was probably a joke, but I never caught the original scene they were calling back to. Besides, a movie like Shanghai Noon is no place for jokes!

perhaps he’s multilingual? but what do i know
