mccain fights telcos
22 Jun 2005Kudos to John McCain for breaking from his party’s fine tradition of corporate favoritism and co-sponsoring a bill to promote municipal ISPs:
Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., Wednesday will introduce legislation that would permit municipalities to offer low-cost broadband service – putting the legislators at odds with SBC Communications and other telecom giants that oppose such networks.
Their measure, dubbed the “Community Broadband Act of 2005,” would serve as a counterweight to a bill offered in late May by Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, that would bar such municipal networks in areas where private companies offer high-speed Internet access.
McCain here poses as an admirable counter-weight to the corporate shill, Pete Sessions.
