John Jay Hooker

For those of you at BlogNashville wondering who John Jay Hooker is, there’s a pretty good write-up here. An excerpt:

He was a descendant of the first Chief Justice of the United States and his namesake, John Jay, and also “Fighting Joe” Hooker, a Union general in the American Civil War whose camp-followers are said to have been the source of a well-known slang term for prostitutes which began as “Hooker’s girls”. John Jay Hooker could have easily been much more like his father and brother, but took a different path.

Seriously, folks. Could you ever hope for a more awesome heritage?

Sadly for that story, if we grant the authority of the Word Detective, that’s not the real origin of the word “hooker”.

Yeah but that story sucks. All in favor of letting the original story stand say AYE. AYE!

Aye

John Jay Hooker has been (and still is, to some degree) one of the most colorful people in Tennessee politics. If this gentleman starts blogging, fasten your seatbelts, the blogosphere is in for a ride! Known for his ability to ‘spam’ the courts with motions, I can only imagine the length and detail that will show up in his posts.

…and I vote ‘Aye’

Tall tales on wikipedia are more the norm than truth and fact. So I’d be wary of that ‘story’.

Hooker sounds like a great iconoclastic character though.

We got to sit with John Jay for a while at a bar across from the conference. If you could imagine 8 very vocal bbloggers sitting spellbound over drinks as this man tells story after story, you can envision the scene.

He was a very interesting man, a legacy that can not be beat, and lived life. He may be a bit of a wacko, he sure is an interesting one.

I also vote AYE!

Great Site!

i know something about mr. john j. hooker, he walked out on his wife and newborne child, abandoned them to fend for themslves. the bum was 21 years older than she. i believe that the man abused both woman and child and for that reason and others is never suitable for public office. he is spoiled and litigious. he may be an interesting conversationalist but he has proven to be less then a gentleman.
